Florida Alcohol Sober Coaching: Why This State Doesn’t Make It Easy
Florida doesn’t have a drinking problem. Florida has a drinking culture. Happy hour signs on every corner in Fort Lauderdale. Boat days that start with beer at 10 a.m. Retirees who’ve earned their nightly cocktail after forty years of work. Spring breakers who fly in specifically to black out on Clematis Street or the Fort Lauderdale strip. Here, drinking isn’t the exception. It’s the wallpaper.
I got sober June 13, 2016. Drugs were the front of my story, but alcohol was never far behind it. “Drugs and alcohol fixed it. For a while.” That’s how I’ve described my childhood elsewhere on this site, and it’s true - by the time I was deep in it, I couldn’t separate one from the other. What I can tell you now, almost ten years sober and running a recovery coaching practice built grassroots through Broward and Palm Beach counties, is that alcohol is the addiction Florida is worst equipped to help you fight.
Nobody stages an intervention over vodka. Alcohol is legal, it’s everywhere, and it’s the one addiction where the people around you will hand you the thing that’s hurting you and call it a party favor. You can drink a bottle of wine a night in Delray Beach and still get invited to brunch. You can’t do that with heroin. That’s what makes alcohol sober coaching different from other recovery work - most people who need it don’t think they qualify for help, because nobody around them thinks they have a problem either.
Alcohol sober coaching isn’t rehab, and it isn’t a rooms-only path either. It’s not diagnosing you or treating you clinically. It’s weekly, sometimes daily, accountability - real conversations about what’s actually driving the drinking, and a plan for rebuilding the parts of your life alcohol has been quietly running for years: your relationships, your mornings, your self-respect. Some of the people I coach have already been through treatment and need something to keep them upright once they’re home. Some have never set foot in a program and just know they can’t keep living like this. That’s what alcohol sober coaching in Florida looks like in practice, day to day.
A lot of the people who reach out about alcohol specifically are what people call “high-functioning.” They have the job, the house, the family - and a drinking habit nobody’s caught yet, including sometimes themselves. Florida makes that easier to hide than almost anywhere else in the country. The bar is always open, the boat is always docked nearby, and “everyone does this here” is a genuinely believable lie.
I coach people in person around Fort Lauderdale, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, and West Palm Beach, and by Zoom everywhere else. Florida-based or not, the work is the same: figure out what the drinking is actually solving, and build something sturdier in its place.
Getting sober from alcohol in a state built around it was never going to be about willpower. It’s about building a life you don’t need to escape from. That’s the work. If you’re ready to start it, reach out and let’s talk about what recovery coaching looks like for you.
